The project involved the construction of the new three storey Rotorua Police Station Building to house the local police force and BOP District Headquarters.

The new building is located on Fenton Street, directly beside the existing Custodial Building. The new building structure has been designed using the PRESSS system which involved post- tensioning certain precast building elements to act in conjunction with the structural steel frame and suspended concrete floors, when under seismic load. A half basement accommodates a number of services and tanks below street level and is tanked with a plastic liner to protect the building against the possible ingress of dangerous gases, sometimes found in the ground in the Rotorua area. The building includes a significant number of building services that required careful co-ordination and seismic bracing during installation, particularly in the light of the buildings IL4 classification.

Being a prominent public building, there were a number of architectural features that were included in the design such as the full height atrium, double storey staff canteen and elaborate cultural screen on the Fenton Street elevation, which all added complexity to the build. This innovative design and detailed interior fit-out provided our site team with several challenges.

This challenging project was delivered on time and to the satisfaction of the NZ Police in May 2014.
