The project involved the seismic upgrade of the well known four storey Commerce Plaza Building in Whakatane.

The works included the installation of driven steel piles; ground anchors and new precast concrete external shear wall panels on the Pyne Street elevation.

On the Commerce Street elevation and on the rear of the central staircase wall, cast in-situ concrete shear walls were constructed directly against existing concrete walls to provide additional bracing to the structure.

Internally, structural steel K-braces were installed from foundation level up to level 2 on either side of the entry lobby to increase the bracing of the central core. A number of the existing fire walls and doors were also upgraded to comply with a recent fire report.

The upgrade work was carried out at the same time as the re-fit of the Nova Energy tenancy. Other tenants on levels 2, 3 and 4 remained in the building during the majority of the works.
